The author (1927-2020) offers us an electrifying thriller from start to finish as usual in her novels. The Kenyon couple has two daughters, Sara, the eldest, and Laurie, who at the age of 4 was kidnapped and received all kinds of abuse. When she returns home both sisters have a very close relationship and Sara protects Laurie. Fifteen years later, her parents die and the little girl develops a multiple personality as a result of the post-traumatic stress of her childhood. The therapy she receives from various psychiatrists and the way her personality disorder manifests itself is very interesting.

Bic Hawkins, the kidnapper, is an obsessive psychopath who follows her around the city to prevent Laurie from confessing what he did to her years before. When she is 21 years old and a student, her teacher Allan Grant is savagely murdered. She is accused of the murder because there is indisputable evidence. She remembers nothing. Sara, who is already a lawyer, prepares her defense but encounters many difficulties. Did Laurie kill him?
