The narrator’s friendship with Fústov, a student living in Moscow, allows him to meet the young Susanna and gain access to the notebook in which she has written her dramatic life story, from childhood up to the moment when the plot unfolds, in 1835.
According to the author, love is the most inaccessible mystery of all, and this is what the novel is about, as well as friendship, since it moves from admiration for Fústov, for his apparent maturity and balance, to disillusionment with his conduct in his relationship with Susanna.
A tragic tale, influenced by Romanticism, with very dramatic moments and vivid characters, some good and others deplorable, all very well portrayed.
