The title refers to the path leading to a better life; a path that, for the protagonist, is represented by a marriage of convenience. This novel, Ginzburg's first, already contains the seeds of the strength that would define her later works. The portrayal of the protagonist is particularly striking: a young, uneducated, weak peasant woman with limited life horizons, who combines tenderness and selfishness, evoking both compassion and repulsion in the reader. The book carries a bitter tone, with touches of social criticism about the harsh rural life in 1940s Italy.
