The book collects some of Pieper’s writings which, although philosophical, address a vast but cultured public. His thesis is that art leads to contemplation on connecting with the depths of the human being. He develops the thesis for music and the visual arts. The eye and ear appear as windows of this depth of being. The relation with the divine is obvious, even though God is not mentioned.
