This is a story about an 80 year old man called Eddie who had lived a life in which he felt unfulfilled and cheated. He lives alone after the death of his wife and, having had no children, his days are filled by maintaining fairground rides and making animals out of pipe cleaners for children. One day he saves a young girl from death when a fairground ride collapses. The story follows Eddie as he tries to adjust to 'heaven' where he meets five people who have played pivotal roles in his life. It is a chance to make sense of your life and actions before going forward to heaven.
A simple story; a little sad and comforting in the way of "It’s a Wonderful Life", without the theology. It's a thought provoking read - it makes you think about the afterlife and the hidden value of ordinary life and sacrifice. Rather than answer any theological questions that it provokes, it just tells a simple story. It tries to tug at the heart strings but doesn’t stir up the emotions too easily.
A nice read and simply told but it doesn’t have the depth or insightfulness to be valued. Indeed, as a moral tale it does not satisfy but rather interests only. It is gently inspiring, though ultimately weak in what it is trying to convey.
