Novel set in the 19th century, in the English countryside. The story is told by Philip, adopted son of Ambrose, a rural lord of Cornwall. Both go on holiday to Florence, where Ambrose marries Rachel, an English woman. Ambrose dies soon after, of unknown causes, and in the will leaves nothing to Rachel. Initially hostile to Rachel, little by little Ambrose's family and friends allow themselves to be captivated by the English woman, who is a true lady of society. Philip falls in love with her, and puts all his goods in her hands, but she rejects him. Philip then discovers old letters from Ambrose, in which he expressed some suspicions about Rachel and her true intentions.
