Encyclical Letter on the Care of Our Common Home.
«Pope Francis has just published the first encyclical on ecology, six months before the UN Summit on Climate Change in Paris. In the encyclical, which bears the Italian title "Laudato si'" - in English, "Praise be to you" - the Pope shows his concern for those issues that have to do with the care of our planet: climate change and global warming; pollution caused by non-biodegradable, toxic and radioactive waste; renewable energies; corruption in the international oil market or personal consumption of energy, among others.
He also refers to the pollution in our lives from the digital world, from new technologies and more specifically from social networks.
The Holy Father collects the extensive teaching of Saint John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The references he makes to the teachings of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, on issues such as climate change, deforestation and the destruction of wetlands are novel.
This text is not addressed only to Catholics, but the Pope himself invites all people to reflect seriously, because "never has humanity had so much power over itself, and there is no guarantee that it will use it well."
