The story follows Dr. David Morey, who seeks redemption for abandoning the woman he once loved. Tempted by the promise of wealth, he marries Dottie, a beautiful but spoiled and neurotic woman who causes him continuous suffering. However, a casual comment prompts him to reflect on his past and ultimately leads him back to his homeland in Scotland, where he hopes to find reparation.
