The novel, the first of a trilogy, narrate Cicero's early years, his climbing to be a Consul, and some of his most important cases. It is very well written, describing the political plots of the Pre imperial Rome and it is useful to get to know how its institutions worked. It is noticeable the research the author has done and the balance between reality and fiction.

There is one brief sensual description. It can give readers the impression that one can conveniently abandon one’s principles just to stay alive. The novel’s depiction of Roman marriages could give young readers a confused idea about marriage. In the novel, people were able to get divorced, so many people were married to multiple partners depending on the political climate and changing fortunes.
