These are the affairs handled by the shipping firm "Dombey and Son". Dombey is rich and loses his wife in childbirth. The son, Paul, is sent to Dr Blimber's school but dies after an illness. The daughter is neglected but an employee of Dombey falls in love with her.

Charles Dickens was born in Kent, England, in 1812 and died in 1870. The book was written while on a vist to Switzerland in 1846 and deals with the issues surrounding arranged marriages for financial gain.
