Book somewhat similar to another title of the author ("Jésus en son temps"). However, this is written 15 years later, with more knowledge, and is dedicated to what the title indicates: the Jewish society of the time. Based extensively on sources from the Bible and the Talmud, it also incorporates other contributions from that time, in addition to various current scholars. With great historical rigor, it seeks to recreate as much as possible the society of the first century: geographic, political, human, historical context, the city of Jerusalem; family, social classes and institutions, relevant social groups (Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes); housing, food, clothing, work, language and writing, science, habits...
It dedicates only the final two chapters to Christ, a true Jew, heir to all this tradition, but at the same time completely supplanting it in his spirituality; and therefore he is not accepted as the expected Messiah. Excellent book, which helps a lot to understand the scenes of the Gospel.
