This essay is based on extensive documentation, including a big amount of personal testimonies, about the fierce resistance of German troops to the advance of the Allies (September 1944), who intend to cross the Rhine, their last obstacle and before advancing on Berlin.
The volume contains a very detailed chronicle, always interesting, with numerous anecdotes that lighten the story and, on the other hand, bring us closer to the human climate that surrounded the event. The errors of the allied command are not hidden, and the military category of the adversary is always recognized. Cruelties on both sides are reported, as well as simple heroic acts. It is striking, for example, that, in a field hospital, the wounded on both sides were treated equally, with the joint work of German and English doctors. The performance of military chaplains is always consigned with respect.
