The novel expands the universe of The Shadow of the Wind, in what has become a tetralogy. The plot moves between detective mystery and supernatural terror, with demonic manipulations in the background. Stylistically, the author uses purely commercial and sensationalist resources to achieve a striking effect. The novel includes fewer sensual passages than the first work —only a brief erotic scene—, but the overall tone remains skeptical and disbelieving.
