The book deals with the person, priesthood, episcopal work and Pontificate of John XXIII, placing it in the historical context from approximately 1880 to his death in 1963. The author has made an effort to study the period, but the whole treatment of the history of the Church is carried out from a totally human perspective. The author takes sides with or against all the different Church personalities of the time, including the Popes of the Period, classifying them as conservative, ultra-conservative, progressive etc. He shows no appreciation of the dangers in which the Church found itself during this whole period from within and from outside. The book is very critical of Pius X, XI and XII.
