This is a specialized study on five female mystical figures (Hadewijch d'Anvers, Térèse d'Avila, Thérèse de Lisieux, Elisabeth de la Trinité, Edith Stein), from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. The author underlines the decisive role of women in the renewal and vitality of the Church, in the face of the challenges that have been presented to her over the course of time.
In addition to synthetically recounting the lives of each of them, the author focuses on the theological-mystical scope of their writings, and shows the strong continuity that exists between these figures. However, it is not intended to be a “demonstration” of this fact, but rather a confrontation of these figures, letting them speak for themselves.
