This novel is an imaginative recreation of Australian colonial history based on Australia’s well-loved bush ballad by Banjo Paterson, ‘Waltzing Matilda’. After the hero of the ballad, a swagman, dies trying to elude capture by troopers at a billabong, his daughter Matilda must try to survive in whatever way she can. The novel follows her life through the 1885-1903 drought, including her struggles on the land, her friendship with the Aboriginal people and the hostility of local squatter, Mr Drinkwater. She finds independence, love and a long-lasting friendship with the land and its local peoples. A fantastic insight into the lives of Australians at the cusp of Federation.
