Viragaya is considered as one of the most important novels of Sinhalese literature. The central character of the novel, Aravinda, tries to live a virtuous life, detached from the world, but many people misunderstand him and find him odd or selfish. The events are described as Aravinda´s memoirs found after his death and the reader will have to judge on his own whether Aravinda was a good person or not. The novel is beatifully written, though quite sad, even dark sometimes.

At some moment the protagonist is unfairly accused of some grave moral misbehaviour. There aren´t long explanations, the accusation is almost implicit, though the topic is quite thorny and can be a little uncomfortable.
