A judge passes over to an editor a novel about a real life crime. In the novel the murderer is condemned to death. The parts of the story don't fit together as far as the editor is concerned and he discovers that the murderer is really the judge. When, after eight years have gone by the judge goes to see him, the editor shows him that it was he who was the murderer. The judge acknowledges his crime and tells the editor that he has been tormented with remorse for his guilt for an innocent man has already died for it, but, to the surprise and annoyance of the editor he tells him that the reason for his remorse is not because of the harm he has done. The novel is written with the mastery, with the death-dealing duplicity which characterise this author and it is the most extensive and unique work he wrote with this intriguing plot. He describes the characters, delves into their psychological profiles, centering on the contradictory affections and the cynicism of those who form a love-triangle. It is a symbolic novel, but realistic at the same time with rich and attractive language. The negative effects of matrimonial infidelity are shown up, marriage for gain, alcoholism etc. It was published in thirty-two episodes in the Newspaper called “Daily News”.
