Sorokin is one of the most renowned contemporary Russian novelists. The Sugar Kremlin is a collection of short stories and novellas, almost all linked by a small sugar figurine of the Kremlin.
Everything takes place in Russia in the year 2028—a fictional setting that, far from depicting a dystopia, reveals the classical Russian soul, with its spirituality, vassalage, and submission to power or force, as well as imprisonment and the arrogance of unscrupulous characters.
The themes are varied and the approaches very different, ranging from a family or children’s story to the tale of a mafia character visiting a brothel. Sorokin is a magnificent writer who enjoys using coarse language and never misses an opportunity to include his erotic fantasies.
