At the start of World War I, Alfie's father promises that he will not go to war, but he must break that promise by being called into the front. The boy suffers the consequences of the conflict, and sees around him how it hits different people. Four years later, Alfie leaves in search of his father, not knowing for sure what awaits him in an almost destroyed world.
