Stories include 'Rain', where a missionary commits suicide after meeting a prostitute, and 'The Alien Com', where an aspiring pianist commits suicide when he was told he would forever be second-rate. William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 in Paris, and died in 1965. He was orphaned at the age of 10, trained as a doctor and gain most success at writing plays. Many of the stories are set it the tropics and have clever twists.
