George Weigel wrote about visiting the stational churches in Rome during Lent and Easter Week, with the help of Elizabeth Lev, an art historian living in Rome, and his son Stephen, a photographer. Some familiarity with Church history and with the geography of Rome is helpful for appreciating the book.

It is very instructive about the Roman martyrs and about the great basilicas of Rome: St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, St. Peter’s, and St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, as well as the churches dedicated to St. Lawrence. The author lived for years in Rome and has a great appreciation for the life of the Church and for the city.
