The novel is set in Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Seti. The firstborn, Chenar, seems to be the chosen one to succeed him on the throne. However, Ramses, the youngest son, is favoured by his mother and has good skills of governance. This is the first book of the pentalogy centered on this famous Egyptian pharaoh. The book narrates the events that occurred during his adolescence until Seti’s death when he must consolidate his position as Pharaoh. Egyptian beliefs and customs of the time are frequent but superficially depicted. This is also applied to the romantic encounters - only outlined but plentiful - of the protagonist with the women who will become his two wives. The historical context is correct, although with certain licence and a lot of imagination, and serves as a setting for the numerous adventures that occur to the different characters, as well as for the love story of Ramses. The book has a proper and entertaining style and is easy to read.
