This posthumous work by Crichton is a pirate novel set in the Caribbean of the 17th century. The original text was found on the author’s computer after his death; perhaps Crichton intended to revise it further, because the novel is not particularly original in the way it presents the intrigue, and the setting is often reduced to references to the filth of the place and portraying all the characters as womanizers and libertines.
In this regard, the author dwells longer than usual on this last aspect. Thus, there are a couple of brief obscene passages and some extended risqué scenes. Such prolixity, combined with the moral permissiveness of the characters, gives the book a low tone.
