It is a great thriller by the well-known American author that grips the reader from the beginning to the end because it maintains the suspense, contains many unpredictable elements and you can't suspect the ending. It is a good novel to entertain; as it captures the attention it helps to rest, to distract the mind. It is very well written, agile, despite its length it reads quickly and with pleasure.
Rufus Harms, a middle-aged black man, has been in the Fort Jackson military prison for 25 years. The conviction was for killing a 10-year-old white girl. His brother Josh sends him a letter from the Army showing that certain military personnel were involved in an experiment to use drugs to make soldiers stronger. Upon reading it, Rufus remembers the episode he had completely forgotten: he was manipulated with chemical substances that led him to perform a violent action that he would never have done. He appeals to the Supreme Court to prove his innocence, which he had always suspected but which did not prevent him from having a painful feeling of guilt.
The book has values. Harms is a kind, good man, respectful of others and faithful to God who sustains him in difficult times. He wants justice to be done. His most treasured book is the Bible which he reads every day and continually prays. Every time he thinks of the dead girl he cries, he can't help it, always in silence. John and Mike have a special affection for their aging parents, and despite a temporary estrangement due to jealousy, they are willing to help each other by putting their lives on the line. Underlying this is the value of a united family. It is clear what is right and what is wrong. In the end, justice triumphs.
