En un mundo imaginario lleno de magia y magos, la familia Heap espera la llegada de su séptimo hijo. Será el séptimo hijo de un séptimo hijo, por lo que será un mago especialmente dotado. Pero la criatura muere después de nacer. A cambio, la familia recibe el encargo de cuidar a una niña recién nacida, abandonada en medio de un bosque...
Primero de una saga de libros sobre magia, para niños. La novela se lee fácil, mantiene un buen ritmo narrativo. Con naturalidad se comprueba la felicidad en la casa de la familia Heap, pese a la pobreza con la que viven, y la tristeza de la vida solitaria, a veces necesaria para algunos magos con especiales responsabilidades.
