Pat Peoples is a former professor of History who returns to his parents’ home after spending some time in a psychiatric hospital. There he tries to overcome his depression with the help of his family and a new therapist, while he makes efforts to recover his former wife called Nikki. The fact is that he does not remember very well what happened before they got into that “separation period;” but since he is aware that he was a bad husband, he begins a plan to become a better person: a person that Nikki may forgive.
He will soon meet Jennifer, a strange young woman who is burdened by a trauma; and although the relationship does not begin well, she thinks she may be the person Pat needs to be able to return to his wife. This is a romantic novel written with a lot of humour. It praises good feelings and is full of secondary characters who are concerned about helping the protagonist. From a moral point of view, what caused Pat’s depression and Jennifer’s mental sickness (sexuality related) gives rise to a very crude dialogue and, although the author avoids sensual scenes, the topic gives rise to two or three obscene references. As happens to similar type of books, it approves that after divorce one needs to “begin again” and look for happiness with someone else.
