Giovanni Barberini is a professor of Ecclesiastical Law in the School of Law at the University of Perugia in Italy. He is an expert on human rights issues and the author of many publications, monographs, essays and articles on the OCSE, the group responsible for human rights and international politics within the Holy See. The book is divided into two parts: the first concerns the diplomatic activities of Casaroli in the world of “real socialism”, and the second, about his role in international politics. Barberini gives a positive evaluation of the Vatican’s ‘Ostpolitik,’ or Eastern Bloc policy, and defines Casaroli as a man with uncommon political, diplomatic, and negotiating powers; courteous in manner, firm in his principles, and prudent in action. This monograph also offers keys to understanding the diplomatic relations of the Holy See between the years 1960-1970 with the Communist countries behind the Iron Curtain.
