Set in a small town in Germany and Berlin following the withdrawal of German troops in 1945 and entry of Russian soldiers. The protagonist, a writer of some fame, has a bad reputation in the town. He is total anti-Nazi and thinks that the Russians will bring peace. Due to a fortuitous circumstance, he becomes mayor and gains more enmity than he had. Eventually, he loses everything, so with his wife he goes to Berlin to the house that he has there. But when they arrive, they find that the authorities have given the house to another family, so they find themselves in Berlin with no money or place to live. As both are addicted to morphine, from time to time, they fall into drug addiction to forget their penury. They recover by entering clinics, they fall again and so on until the protagonist decides to write and gets an advance. There is a breath of hope in its pages, but without reference to the transcendent.
