Before reading the book it should be noted that it is more of an art book than a novel, although it does have a certain plot. Nice paintings of the Siena School are reproduced. It is a work that will appeal especially to lovers of painting.

Pulitzer Prize winner (2017) Misham Matar was born in New York (1970) to Libyan parents, grew up in Tripoli and Cairo, and has spent most of his adult life in England.

Now he offers us a story about the strength of Art to overcome pain and misfortune. The publisher notes that "with exquisite and measured prose, beautifully illustrated and enriched with accurate and elegant judgments, the author invites us to reflect on the value of art as an instrument for illuminating our own inner landscape and helping us to understand the world around us". It is as an exploration of the impact of art on life and writing, and a lucid reflection on grief.

It is a recommendable work, with very careful and good prose. It offers no drawbacks. Perhaps at times it can ramble a bit.
