Autobiography of Nelson Mandela. A great book written with clarity and engages the reader from the beginning to the end. He had an extraordinary life: he was a true leader in South Africa who fought against racial oppression, injustice, misery, freedom and won in 1993 the Nobel Peace Prize and was the first black president of his country, and the first to be elected by universal suffrage -1994-.
It narrates his childhood, youth, imprisonment and liberation. He was born on July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, a tiny village that was part of the Xhosa nation to which he belonged. He began writing his memoirs in hiding in 1974 during his imprisonment on Robben Island.
It is very interesting to see all the actions he took for the promotion of social reconciliation. He did not take on communism - although he worked closely with members of that party - because his Methodist religion was incompatible with that ideology.
He explains with sincerity the breakup of his two marriages and reproaches himself for not having been able to dedicate enough time to his family because he was completely focused on the struggle for the liberation of his people. He does not talk about his feelings, emotions or details of his family life.
He is a very controversial character, one can agree or disagree with his convictions, political strategies and his activism. It is a recommended reading to know one of the most influential political figures of the twentieth century.
