Book written shortly after World War II, by a German priest, who endeavored to awaken consciences in the face of Nazism.
Based on the Gospel, the book deals with the relationship between Christ and the State (the several public authorities): as a king and as a subordinate. It then analyzes what should be the Christian's principles of action in this area.
The conclusion has already been given by Jesus: give the State its due, and God its due. But to avoid a double morality, this is only valid if what is owed to the State is not opposed to what is owed to God, because then the latter has to impose itself.
Later Ratzinger wrote a deeper work on this subject.
