Jack Aubrey, a captain in the British Navy, wishes to marry Sophie, but her family objects because of the social difference between them. Jack has only his salary and several debts. In command of the frigate Surprise, an excellent sailing ship, he must take a representative of the Crown from the metropolis to India. He is accompanied on the voyage by Stepehen, an excellent doctor and love affairs. Jack wishes to find a French ship; since both countries are at war, the booty would help him to improve his economic situation. Life on a ship of the time is described in detail. It is not necessary to have seafaring knowledge, although it helps to know the terms of sailing ships. Good novel for the setting and the richness of the plot. There are other books in this series.
