A detective novel from the Commisario Brunetti series. The strange circumstances surrounding the death of a gypsy girl and a fundraising carried out by a false preacher leads Brunetti to investigate different areas of corruption in the Venetian society, implicating police and Italian political personalities. He take advantage to slip ironic and hurtful comments towards the teachings of the Church and to the Catholic hierarchy and various institutions of the same type, comments that have little or nothing to do with the plot of the novel. The tone is at times quite shallow and amoral.
