The Exemplary Novels, published in 1613, constitute, according to the author himself, the first example of short story in Castilian literature, in accordance with the meaning of the word "novel" at that time. Among the 12 works that make up the collection, notable differences can be observed; some are close to Italian models, while others show a remarkable deepening both psychologically, socially, and stylistically. All are small masterpieces conceived by the genius of Cervantes.
In addition to the literary nature and quality of Cervantes’ Exemplary Novels, each of them conveys a vision of life, a common sense full of simplicity and a sense of humor, which makes them recommended for any young reader, for the benefit they can gain from them.
