Colonel Lucio Victorio Mansilla (1831–1913) undertook a journey in 1870 through southern Argentina to confirm the agreement between the Ranquel Indians and the authorities. The newspaper La Tribuna de Buenos Aires published the account of that adventure in serialized installments that were presented as letters and later published under the title An Excursion to the Ranquel Indians. This gave rise to one of the fundamental works of 19th-century Argentine literature: a testimony of a fascinating lived experience, it analyzed recent history and revealed the difficult coexistence.
