Second book of the espionage series starring Jackson Lamb and his team from the Swamp House, where the British intelligence service commanders send the disgraced spies. While two agents are tasked with protecting a visiting Russian oligarch whom MI5 intends to enlist in its ranks, Dickie Bow, a former Cold War-era spy, is found dead in the back seats of a bus on the outskirts of Oxford.

Although all signs point to a fulminating heart attack, his old friend Jackson Lamb begins to investigate and uncovers a dark web of Cold War secrets that seems to lead to Alexander Popov, a former Soviet legend. Perhaps the plot is not as original as the first installment, but it is just as thrilling. Also compared to the first, the language is more vulgar, with frequent profanity, and the tone is descriptive in a brief sexual passage.
