The second book in the Tales of Alvin Maker, about Alvin Miller, the seventh son of a seventh son, and his powerful “knacks”, mixes the real story of late-eighteenth-century America with elements of magic. Alvin goes on a journey with his brother and is kidnapped. He is rescued by Native Americans – the Red Men – and with them, begins to learn about nature. Card uses the storyline to talk about the problems Native Americans had with the arrival of Europeans on their land.
