The young centurion Marcus Flavius Aquila is stationed in Britain and is injured in fierce fighting. After some time, he decides to return to Britain and hunt for the lost Eagle standard of his father’s legion which went missing north of Hadrian’s Wall. Marcus and Esca, his former British slave and now companion, embark on a daring and dangerous mission to bring back the Eagle and thus enable the legion to be reformed. This, though, would be a decision of the Senate.

This is already a classic of children’s literature, researching whatever sources of history are available and winding them into an historical tale of adventure and achievement. However, it can be read by all ages and gives an accurate insight into Britain at the time of the Roman Empire.
