As he explains in the Introduction of this book, Christopher West wrote an earlier book, Theology of the Body Explained, a 500 pages commentary to "John Paul II’s revolutionary teaching on the body and sexual love". Its academic style and sheer size, he thought, would intimidate the average person, hence the preset work of under 45 thousand words plus a Glossary of 86 terms phrases to help understanding. The content follows the text of the Holy Father audiences during several years. The author also resorts to points in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Its purpose is, of course, to make intelligible the role of the body in sexual matters and, within this context, he tries first to dispel Manichaean errors and, then, he insistently underlines the value of the corporal element. There is an effort in the author to follow a style that may help easy reading by using easy language and relying on colloquial expressions. Perhaps the adopted words are unnecessarily direct.
