This is a science-fiction story about what happens when the moon blows up. Two thirds of the book is centred on the race to get people off of the earth before the remains of the moon start raining down an destroying the planet. The final third picks up the story many centuries afterwards.
There is very little reference to religion or God in the story even though one would have expected that, faced with such an apocalyptic even many people would have turned to God. However, if anything there seems to be cynicism and anger. Towards the end of the book there are hints from the author that there may be a general turning towards some sort of God or as it is called 'Purpose'. So possibly an acknowledgement that people do need something bigger in their lives.
There are a number of descriptions of sexual acts although fortunately these do not go into too much detail. There are some lesbian characters who pair up and one of them remains one of the main characters of the book.
