An account of Perth, Scotland, at the end of the fourteenth century. The mild king of Scots, Robert III, is on the throne. His son, the duke of Rothsay, tries to carry off Catharine, the daughter of Simon Glover. In the fight to do so, Glover cuts of the hand of Ramorny, who in revenge murders Glover at Falkland castle. There is a feud between the two clans Quhele and Chattan, and they agree to fight with thirty on each side.
Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771 and died in 1832 after a life practising law and then going into printing. He was an important proponent of the historical novel, bringing excitement and intrigue to historical storytelling.
