The work is the second volume of the three-volume project of the author. It covers the Italian campaign period of the Second World War. The author tackles history from a journalistic perspective. Thus, rather than focusing on dry historical facts, military strategies, and so forth, he writes about soldiers and their experiences, and the life that they went through while fighting. The war is the setting in which the human drama of individual persons is played out, often tragically.
