Warren H. Carroll is a leading Catholic historian, founder and first president of Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia. This book reflects the events happened in Spain during the year 1936, the first year of the Civil war 1936-1939. The last chapter -Road to victory- makes a resume of the rest of the Civil War. The book centers its attention in the first and more violent months of religious persecution, and it reminds the reader that in just six months of the year 1936, thirteen bishops and nearly seven thousand priests, seminarians, monks and nuns were martyred in Republican Spain. It is affirmed in the text that this persecution was the greatest clerical bloodletting in so short a span of time since the persecutions of the Church by the ancient Roman emperors.
