This novel tells the story of St. Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Jesuits) and the time period in which he lived. The author narrates how Ignatius recieved a wound in battle, and his recovery, his conversion, and the beginnings of apostolic activity. In a historical context, it describes the war between France and Spain in which he was wounded, as well as the pilgrimage that he made to the Holy Land, several European wars of the time with its horrors, the looting of Rome, and the later beginning of the Society of Jesus. At the same time as the author narrates this real story, he descrives two imaginary characters: a Swiss mercenary and a Spanish girlwhose lives cross paths with St. Ignatius.
