Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin suffers from epilepsy, so he is sent to Switzerland to be treated by a doctor. In this distant country his guardian dies, and he has no close relatives who can take care of him, so he decides to go in search of a distant relative who lives in the Russian capital. Through different events and dialogues, the author expresses some of his political and social ideas.
