In November 1890, the London winter is relentless. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are having tea by the fireside when an obviously nervous gentleman bursts into 221B Baker Street. He says that he is being pursued by a mysterious character, who must be the sole survivor of an American criminal gang, which had been broken up in Boston with his help. This character has followed him across the Atlantic and is seeking revenge.

The detective enlists the help of the "Baker Street Irregulars" and, together with Watson, follows in the gangster's footsteps. They stumble upon a complication that brings them into conflict with important people. The Silk House is a dark and spectacular case.

From a moral point of view, Horowitz presents numerous characters with flaws and misconduct: some have an appearance of honesty that masks their moral misery. The author distinguishes right from wrong and avoids immoral descriptions.
