Tips for Talking to Your Kids about Sex

Published in 2020. A very brief book with practical suggestions to help parents talk personally with their children about sex. It starts from the idea that parents are the first and foremost educators of their children, advises that the fundamental method for sex education is conversations with their own children, and gives specific advice for various ages, from 2 to 18 years old.
The text is a summary of the collective experience of the leaders and participants of the non-profit organization Canavox. Begun in 2013 by seven moms and one marriage activist, Canavox has become an international network of friends for marriage, with reading groups in 36 states and 27 countries. CanaVox reading groups provide opportunities for friends to have open and honest conversations about marriage and family. The book draws on traditional Christian values about sex, although its arguments and advice are based on natural law, social science research, and personal accounts of real life. That is, its discourse is not explicitly Christian nor theological.
Some important topics covered: the danger of pornography and how to avoid it; true love consists in giving oneself to the other in a spirit of sacrifice; sex exists to express this love between man and woman and to bring new life into the world; sex is a gift that should be reserved for marriage between man and woman; the dignity of the person; the need to live sexual integrity and self-control; dating, friendship with young people of the opposite sex, how to live chastity in these contexts, modesty; when talking about contraception, the text limits itself to saying that each family will have to teach their values and beliefs on this issue, but it does say that it is best to wait until marriage to have sexual relations and talks about the harm that contraception can bring.
All in all, a very practical and useful tool for parents, although it needs to be complemented with formation about sex given from a Christian faith perspective.
