The Maidens' Consent (also published as An Innocent Girl’s Consent) is the translation of a famous play by Leandro Fernández de Moratín written in 1801 and premiered in 1806. It is one of the most famous plays of Spanish neoclassical theater and enjoyed great popularity from its first performance. It is a comedy which tells the story of the proposed marriage of convenience between Francisca, sixteen, and the noble Don Diego, almost sixty, and how Francisca's maid, Rita, helped her mistress unite with her true love, Don Carlos. The work presents the criticisms of arranged marriages raised by some intellectuals.
