The book constitutes one of Agatha Christie's most emblematic works, as she is regarded as a master of mystery. The novel stands out for its ingenious structure and its atmosphere of growing tension. The author introduces ten characters invited to a mysterious island, where, one by one, they begin to die according to an eerie nursery rhyme. This seemingly simple premise becomes a profound study of guilt, justice, and human nature.

The novel breaks with the classic pattern of her other detective stories by dispensing with a central investigator such as Poirot or Miss Marple. Here, there is no hero to lead the resolution: all the characters are, simultaneously, victims and suspects. This device allows the intrigue to intensify without rest, keeping the reader in a constant state of suspicion. The isolation on the island functions as a moral microcosm where each character faces the consequences of their past actions.

From a technical standpoint, Christie shows an exceptional command of narrative rhythm. Each chapter is precisely calculated to increase tension and sow new doubts, while her prose—sober and direct—contributes to the oppressive and claustrophobic atmosphere. The use of the nursery rhyme as a leitmotiv is a brilliant device: it turns innocence into something sinister, reflecting the contrast between appearance and truth, one of the recurring themes in the author’s work.

Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay, England, and died in 1976. She worked as a dispenser of medicines during the First World War, which gave her a deep knowledge of poisons. Her marriage broke down in 1926, and she later remarried. In total, she wrote sixty-six detective novels. Her style is very popular—easy to read and ingenious.
